The Artizan opened in the summer of 2017 and since then has established itself as one of the go-to places when out in Middlesbrough. It has grown from humble beginnings; family and friends coming together to build something that Middlesbrough can be proud of. Living in the North East of England throughout childhood and most of their adult lives, Fahim, Andrew and Anthony have come together to give back to the community that shaped the men they are today. Being built from nothing, The Artizan truly reflects the hard-working ethics and dedication that the tradesman of the North East have become known for.
Inside they have done an amazing job in transforming the building into one of the coolest looking bars in Teesside, it’s the type of place that if your friends were coming to visit you would want to bring them here. It would be quite easy to forget you are still in Middlesbrough for a moment, however, if you look up you will see a Dorman Long Steel Girder running through the building acting as a reminder to our Teesside heritage.
The artists behind the bar are Carl and Kim, who both have a huge passion for cocktails, to them it’s much more than just a drink, it’s a craft. Carl learnt his trade bartending in California, while Kim spent time working behind bars in London, while also taking influences from different corners of the world such as Edinburgh, New York, Amsterdam and Tokyo. The pair have brought this experience and knowledge back to The Artizan so they can help create something special.
The first time we walked through the doors at The Artizan we were greeted by the aroma of strawberries, when we asked what it was we were pointed in the direction of a simmering pot of strawberries, it was explained to us this was preparation for the cocktail syrups, which are all made from scratch. This attention to detail shows how seriously The Artizan takes its drinks and you won’t be finding any shortcuts here. Another thing which stood out was that spirit measurements for cocktails were ounces and not the usual millilitres, which means they are bigger and highlights those international influences.
Looking at the cocktail menu you won’t find your classics like Espresso Martini (although they will make them if that’s what you fancy), they serve their own interpretation of them offering something you might not have tried before, but trust us, you will love them (Aniscumulus is a must try)!
Unsure what to go for? Well, at the Artizan it’s table service and Kim, Carl and experienced floor staff are super friendly so will happily go through the menu with you helping you to find the perfect drink. It’s not all about their cocktails though, they also have a very healthy selection of gin and draft is also available with a new addition of doing special events from baby showers, networking, wine tasting nights, quiz nights and birthday celebrations and any other event you would love to hold in this very contemporary space.
