Shanti Vegaterian Cafe & Bistro
On the corner of Marske Road and Marske Mill Lane is The Earthbeat Centre, an old school building which now houses a variety of artistic and cultural businesses. It's only a short distance from Saltburn town centre but on your first visit it's easy to think your sat nav is playing tricks on you, however if you drive around the back you'll find a small car park on the old school playground. Walking through the corridors you'll pass businesses offering yoga and meditation classes eventually ending up Shanti, which has a lovely vibe, it's decor is a range of soft colours that are inviting and relaxing.
So often vegans can feel like they are an inconvince when eating out at restaurants, with most places having to putting something together as an afterthought. However, things are completely different at Shanti with them embracing the vegan & vegetarian community offering dishes you wont be able to find anywhere else in Teesside. Although you shouldn't be put off if you're not vegan/vegetarian, in fact you might be surprised to hear that many who regularly visit Shanti are not vegan/vegetarians - the tasty food and the chilled out vibe more than compensates for the lack of meat or fish on the menu, encouraging you to be experimental.
All the meals on the menu are homemade prepared there and then using local produce wherever possible. The make some of the best scones Teesside has to offer and the half chilli, half dahl, with cumin rice, yoghurt, chutney and homemade flat bread (freshly made every morning) is bloomin' delicious. They also do a chocolate courgette cake which is one of the tastiest desserts we've ever had, and before you ask, no it doesn't taste of courgette! One thing for sure you'll never leave Shanti feeling hungry as the portions are generous so can can even take a bit home to enjoy later on.
Now the only thing that's missing to accompany this delicious food is a beverage, and you'll be happy to hear they have a selection of vegan teas and coffee, and if you want something a little stronger they sell vegan wines, ales along with a good selection of gins. If you're thinking it might be a bit early to be hitting the gins then you'll be happy to know they also have music and poetry evenings (check out their social media to keep in the loop when these are) along with themed nights which offers something unique to Teesside.
This hidden gem has recently become even shinier as now have recently fitted some doors leading to a wonderful outside area where you can enjoy their delicious food in the sunshine (when mother nature permits)!
